FAMILY by THE CAST OF CHEERS (2012, School Boy Error)

Debut album from Dublin quartet THE CAST OF CHEERS is a punchy, boisterous record with a couple of great hook-laden tracks.

The comparisons with the likes Bloc Party, Vampire Weekend and Two Door Cinema Club are inevitable for such a danceable guitar record. At times singer Conor Adams sounds a lot like Kele Okereke and the frantic, fast guitar lines bare strong similarities to the African influenced first Vampire Weekend album.

It’s a confident first album and whilst not being as great as the three debuts for the aforementioned bands there are some cracking moments such as the frenetic ‘Family’ and ‘Poce Mit’, and the complex tribal math-rock of ‘Marso Sava’. The one big downer on the album is the last of it’s ten tracks, ‘They Call It A Race’. Here Adam’s endlessly repeat the phrase ‘is anyone else losing heart tonight’ and yes by the end you will be. It’s a bad end to a pretty good album.
